Complexity is Relative

Posted by Helen Hoefele in Purpose

For those of you who have read at least a few of my posts, you’ve probably already noticed that I tend to prefer to look at situations as “it depends” or “sometimes this, and other times that” rather than as in absolutes.

Does that mean I’m wishy-washy, or a flip-flopper, or indecisive? Some may think so (see what I mean), though I wouldn’t.

Perhaps it’s just my gift to notice that there is more than one side to every story, or that there is often more than just what appears on the surface.  Though don’t get me wrong, it’s not that I believe there is a huge iceberg below every blip in the sea either.

Certainly it helps no one to overcomplicate simple situations, or conversely, to oversimplify complex situations.

It just seems that many situations are never as simple or as complex as they may initially appear.  To me, life isn’t purely hard or purely easy, it’s actually both.

Some situations are more complex than others.  Some situations are simpler than others.

In the context of finding our purpose, in my experience, how difficult or how easy it is to discover that purpose falls along those same lines.  It simply depends on what you are looking for. Grasping for something that doesn’t exist yet or hasn’t been defined yet is very different from reaching for something that is just out of your reach.

As in the case of sunken treasure ships, sometimes those lost treasures are discovered accidently by a recreational diver, other times it takes professional treasure hunters decades of hard work before they may (or may not) find their jackpot.

Why not learn to enjoy the journey regardless of the destination?  I’m sure you’ll cross paths with your friends, Complexity and Simplicity, often enough along the way.

How about you? Do you see life as complex, simple, or some combination of both?

I think I generally see it pretty simple; black/white, etc. I just think some people try to make it complex as they try to manipulate etc.
When you keep it simple, life is good!! :)
