It’s Blog Action Day for our environement! I’m sure many people will be mentioning Al Gore’s (along with the U.N.’s Intergovernmental Panel on Global Change’s) recent winning of the Global Peace Prize for raising awareness to the challenge of global warming. Congratulations to them, and to us, may they spend the $1.5 million prize money wisely. This is truly a prize that we should all benefit from.
Despite the many criticisms that are being raised by the skeptics who question the actual extent and urgency of the crisis we are facing, are being debated on some of the cable news stations in recent days, I want to point out those counter-arguments that ring the loudest with me. According to some of the guests on yesterday’s Fox News Channel, consider these points:
- Why take the chance on being wrong about the existence or the risks or the imminence of global warming?
- Why not err on the side of caution?
- Don’t make it about right or wrong (regarding the veracity of every single fact or regarding the extent of the urgency of their claims), make it a positive that the environment is now center stage for future discussions and initiatives.
- Don’t necessarily let the suggestion of placing a punitive or non-compliance tax on businesses as potentially contributing to the slowing of the economy, think of it as clean business is good business.
The environment should be important to everyone. Everything we do or don’t do will have an impact for us and for future generations. Why not take care of something that is precious and which for far too long has been taken for granted by so many people. Appreciation and gratitude for our environment is long overdue. The little things matter. Start by not wasting and not littering.
