With so many global issues in the world, it’s hard to choose which to support and then to know what to do. Getting the message out is the first step. As Mia Farrow mentions in one of the interview links below: “…with knowledge comes responsibility…”

There have been a number of big name citizens in the news lately, who have been working very hard and very selflessly to make a difference in this world. Read some of their stories for inspiration:

BOB GELDOF
Bob Geldorf gives an update on Live8Live, which is in the 20th year of it’s journey since Live Aid, holding people accountable on the promise to make poverty history. His report on progress is honest. He talks about: the good, the bad, and the ugly.

  • the good = the debt piece;
  • the okay = aid ;
  • the unseemingly ugly = the trade piece

What is this trade piece? Read on: TRADE

The Facts: In 1980 Africa had a 6% share of world trade. By 2002 this had dropped to just 2% despite Africa having 12 % of the world’s population. If Africa could regain just an additional 1% share of global trade, it would earn $70 billion more in exports each year - several times more than what the region currently receives in foreign aid.

The Promise: To help double the size of Africa’s economy and trade by 2015. What the G8 must do NOW: G8 leaders must show leadership and commitment to deliver a pro-Africa conclusion the WTO’s Doha Development Round in 2006 – that means: 100% access for all African products to our markets; eliminations of rich country subsidies that damage Africa; serious investment in Africa; capacity to trade; and no forced liberalisation.

CHER

With a small, but just as sincere an effort, is Cher, who opposes the war but supports the troops. Cher and Operation Helmet Join Forces to Help American Soldiers . Why should a simple piece of relatively inexpensive yet severe-injury-reducing equipment, such as helmet-liners, be so hard for the military to afford?
